Make a Living Doing What You Love

By Glen Williams, Jr.

The most popular question at parties is usually, "So what do you
do for a living?"
Sometimes I love to see the look on a person's
face when they are asked this fateful question, but not usually.
Most people get this strained look on their face, like they are
trying to seem happy about what they do, but they hate their jobs
so much that it is impossible to fool anyone.

But when someone loves, really loves, what they do, it's almost
shocking. How tragic that the majority of the population spends
the majority of their best years doing something they loathe.

Why is it that people are willing to toil away at miserable jobs
for what is usually a less than impressive paycheck? Is it to
support their families? To buy nice things? To feel secure? I'm
sure all of these things play a part, but I don't think they are
the essence of why millions of people accept deplorable jobs.

I think it has something to do with a lack of confidence and
determination. You would think it takes more determination to
commit to forty years of hateful work than a few weeks, months
or years of struggling to become established in a field that you
love. When it's put that way, writing that book that's been
swimming around in your head, or saving to start that interior
design shop, or designing a website to promote your poetry
doesn't seem like such a hassle.

Suffering for most of your life; now that's a hassle.

The truth is, no matter how many people throw negative comments
your way, no matter how tough your financial situation gets, it
will still be worth it to try and make a living doing something
you love.

Anyone can make a living doing the thing they love as long as
they are willing to commit two things: time and money. I know, I
know, these are the most precious things we have. But if they are
so precious, why aren't you happy now? You probably work no more
than 50 hours a week. You probably make enough money for food,
shelter, clothing, an X-Box and an HDTV with  all the essentials.
But none of these things will ever fulfill you if you spend eight hours
a day wishing the day would end.

So there you have it. If you want to make a living doing what you
love, you have to actually do what you love, and be willing to
make a financial commitment to it, whether that means putting
money into it or sacrificing money because of it.

Yeah, it sounds tough. But every time you want to give up, think
of the alternative.
